Department of HEPATO PANCREATO BILIARY (HPB) SURGERY

GEM HPB department provides comprehensive treatment for diseases related to liver, pancreas and biliary system. It is the first exclusive department in India to provide both Robotic & Laparoscopic surgeries for various diseases like Gall bladder stones, Bile duct stones, Choledochal cyst, Hydatid cyst, Acute & Chronic pancreatitis, Pancreatic Pseudocyst, cystic tumours of the pancreas and cancers of liver, pancreas and gall bladder.

This centre has the distinction of being the first in the world to perform totally laparoscopic Whipple’s operation, also called pancreaticoduodenectomy for pancreatic cancer. Since then, this department has performed one of the largest numbers of laparoscopic Whipple’s procedure in the world.

With liver transplantation emerging to be standard of care for chronic liver disease, GEM hospital (currently the largest liver & pancreas cancer surgery centre in Chennai & Coimbatore), is also the first centre in India to offer laparoscopic donor hepatectomy for living donor liver transplantation . This reduces the risk associated with the donor surgery, for the living donor, who donates a part of the liver to the recipient, enabling early recovery.
